You bought solar shades for all the right reasons. The afternoon glare on your TV is gone, the sofa isn't fading, the room still feels bright and open, and you can sit at your desk and watch the neighbourhood go by.

Then the sun goes down. You switch on a lamp, glance at the window, and two things happen at once. Your view outside disappears and you're staring at a reflection of your own living room. And somewhere out on the street, a person walking their dog can see a lot more of your evening than you were expecting.

If that's the moment that brought you here, nothing is broken and you didn't buy the wrong shade. This is exactly what solar shades are designed to do, and once you understand the "why," the fix is simple. What really happens after dark

Here's the honest version, before we get into the details.

  • Looking out: once it's dark outside and your lights are on, you won't see much through your solar shade. The glass and fabric turn into a soft mirror, and mostly you'll see your own room reflected back.
  • Looking in: from the street, your window becomes the brightest thing around. Depending on how bright your lamps are and how open the fabric weave is, someone outside can see shapes, movement, furniture outlines, and sometimes a lot more than that.

So the daytime superpower of solar shades - see out, don't be seen - quietly swaps sides at night. It isn't a manufacturing flaw and it isn't something a better fabric can fully solve. It's light behaving the way light always behaves.

Why does the "one-way" effect flip when the sun sets?

Light always travels from the brighter side of a window towards the darker side. That single sentence explains everything about how solar shades work.

During the day, the outdoors is dramatically brighter than your living room. All that bright outdoor light bounces off the face of the shade before anyone can look through it, while the light coming towards you is strong enough to travel through the weave and give you a clear view. You get privacy and a view at the same time, which feels a bit like magic.

At night, you flip the switch on that relationship. Now your room is the bright side and the street is the dark side. Light travels out through the same tiny gaps in the weave that used to let you look in the other direction. Your neighbour is now the one standing in the dark looking at a lit-up screen, and you're the one squinting into blackness.

Same shade. Same fabric. Opposite result. Nothing about the product changed except which side of the glass the light is coming from.

Does a lower openness percentage fix it?

This is the single biggest misunderstanding we hear, so let's clear it up properly.

Solar shade fabrics are rated by openness factor - the percentage of the fabric surface made up of tiny gaps in the weave. Think of it like the mesh on a screen door:

  • 1% openness - very tight weave, blocks around 99% of UV, softest view out
  • 3% openness - tight weave, blocks around 97% of UV
  • 5% openness - the popular middle ground, blocks around 95% of UV while keeping a usable view
  • 10% – 14% openness - loose weave, the clearest view outside, the least sun control

Now here's the part that catches people out. Openness describes the weave and how much sun the fabric filters. It does not describe how opaque the shade is at night.

A 1% solar shade will blur and soften what's visible from outside - details go fuzzy, faces become smudges, your windows read as glowing panels rather than clear glass. But it will not black you out. Shapes and movement still come through. So if someone tells you a 1% shade solves night privacy, that's a half-truth worth knowing about before you spend money on it.

Does fabric colour change what people see at night?

Colour matters more than most people expect, though not in the direction you'd guess.

  • Darker fabrics (charcoal, bronze, black) absorb light rather than scattering it. During the day they give you the crispest, clearest view outside and the best glare control, which is why they're the go-to for big picture windows with a view worth keeping.
  • Lighter fabrics (white, ivory, sand) reflect light. They brighten the room and look softer and more opaque from outside, but your view out is hazier — a bit like looking through a sheer curtain.

After dark, both go see-through. Colour only changes how sharp the picture is, not whether there is one. A light fabric will diffuse your interior lighting into a softer glow, while a dark fabric tends to show cleaner outlines. Neither one is a privacy solution on its own.

Because this is genuinely hard to judge from a photo on a screen, we'd always suggest ordering swatch samples and holding them up against your own window - once in the afternoon, once with the lamps on at night. Five minutes with a real sample will tell you more than an hour of reading.

Your lighting matters more than your fabric

Here's the part most guides skip, and it's the one you have the most control over. The thing that decides how exposed you are at night isn't the shade. It's the difference in brightness between your room and the street.

Shrink that gap and you get privacy back. A few practical ways to do it:

  • Move lamps away from the window. A table lamp sitting right beside the glass lights you up like a stage. The same lamp on the far side of the room barely registers from outside.
  • Skip the big ceiling light in the evening. Overhead lighting floods the whole room evenly, including the window. Two or three low, warm lamps give you the same usable light with far less spill.
  • Put your main lights on a dimmer. Dropping brightness by half makes a visible difference from the pavement.
  • Use your outdoor lighting. This one surprises people - a porch light, a garden light or a nearby streetlight actually improves your privacy, because it lifts the outdoor brightness and closes the contrast gap.

And if you want to know exactly where you stand, do the 60-second test. Set up your room the way you normally have it in the evening, walk outside, and look back at your own windows from the pavement, from the driveway, and from wherever a neighbour would realistically stand. Whatever you can see, they can see. It takes a minute and it settles the question far better than any article can.

Where solar shades still earn their keep after dark

Losing night privacy doesn't make solar shades a bad buy. It makes them a specific buy. There are plenty of windows where the night behaviour simply doesn't matter:

  • Upper-floor rooms where nobody is standing at eye level anyway
  • Windows facing your own enclosed garden, a private courtyard or a boundary wall

  • Ground-floor rooms facing a street or footpath. Anywhere someone walks past a metre from your glass.
  • Media rooms and nurseries. Both need real darkness, and a solar shade will never deliver it.

Two things catch people out even after they've bought the right shade.

  • Light gaps at the sides. An inside-mount shade sits within the window frame, which looks tidy but leaves a small gap down each edge and at night, that gap is a bright stripe visible from outside. 1. Can people see through solar shades at night?

Yes, if your interior lights are on and it's dark outside. How much they see depends on how bright your room is and how open the weave is, but expect at least silhouettes and movement.

2. Do 1% solar shades give privacy at night?

Not fully. A 1% weave blurs detail considerably and makes your windows read as glowing panels rather than clear glass, but shapes and movement still come through. Openness measures the weave and UV filtering, not night-time opacity.

3. Will turning my lights off fix it?

Yes, completely - with the lights off, the contrast reverses again and the shade goes back to being a screen. That's a real answer for a room you're not using, but not a practical one for a room you're actually living in.

4. Do solar shades darken a room for sleep?

No. Solar fabric filters light rather than blocking it, so a solar shade will never give you a dark bedroom. For sleep, you want blackout.

5. Are dual shades better than fitting two separate shades?
